Indigenous students attend LEAP into Law's first Deadly Law event
Six Y10 students from Thornbury High School attended this exciting new workshop, which is aimed at Indigenous students in Y9-12 with an interest in a legal profession career.
The day began at Victoria University’s Queen Street campus where students were greeted by staff from Tarwirri and LEAP into...Law. After a quick discussion of the day’s activities, students headed to the Family Court to witness a trial in action. They learned about the different roles in court, the court system and process, while observing a family law dispute.
After leaving the courts, students split into groups to visit two different law firms and find out about life as a solicitor. They were taken on an office tour before breaking for morning tea and speaking with lawyers from the firms.
Tarwirri Indigenous Law Students met the students at Victoria University for lunch. The group discussed pathways into the law, their favourite subjects and the highs and lows of being a law student.
On the way back to Thornbury High, the students stopped at the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS), a legal referral and community education service which was established to address the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the criminal justice system. Students met with VALS staff to discuss the role of the service and current legal issues.
Feedback about the workshop was extremely positive.
The supervising teacher commented:
"Thank you so much for providing Thornbury High School with such a fantastic program. Students were given an amazing opportunity to gain insight into the world of law and just how diverse it is. Everyone was so generous with their time, knowledge and so keen to be part of the program".
When asked the most important thing they learned from the workshop, students remarked:
"There are different types of law…"
"Take the opportunities that come your way."
"That [a law degree] opens up more opportunities and jobs."
