Students focus on community and mental health

Sixty students, from Lakeview Senior College, Copperfield College  and Werribee Secondary College, attended a LEAP Hospital Experience Day at Sunshine Hospital on Monday 20 April.

The students arrived with a diverse array of aspirations for future careers in Health, such as paramedicine, nursing, psychology, radiology, and ophthalmology.

Challenged to develop creative strategies to improve mental health in the community, the students displayed creativity, insight and sensitivity. Their solutions included: ideas for creating community environmental areas where people can go to relax; mental health awareness days; and providing more funding to sporting clubs, as they not only offer enjoyable exercise but also a social network for people.

Students participated in a vital signs workshop, where they learnt how to use a stethoscope, and three other workshops focusing on clinical skills, oral health, and psychology.

Feedback from the students about what they learnt during the day included:
there are many different health professions”,
if you want to achieve a career in the health industry there are many paths to get to that”, and
it’s OK to “have (second) thoughts and change your mind about career pathways”.
