Advanced Engineering holiday program a winner
Run in conjunction with The Engineering Link Group, this exciting two day event was a real hit with attending students.
Students from 13 LEAP priority schools across Victoria participated in a range of activities covering different fields of engineering.
Over the two days senior year students had the chance to participate in a range of activities designed to provide an experience of different fields of engineering. These included Mechatronic, Civil, Telecommunications, Aeronautical, Environmental and Software engineering. The workshops were run by representatives from La Trobe University, the University of Melbourne, Monash University as well as industry representatives from Golder Associates and Defence Force Recruiting.
Each day the students worked to solve problems in different fields of engineering. In teams, they were given time to plan, design, produce and construct solutions using fundamental principles of engineering. After testing of the group's final solution, teams got feedback from real engineers. Students worked with digital antenna construction, iPad App development, mechatronic robotic arms and programming, water extraction from contaminated sources, parachute design and development, and suspension bridge construction.
Students had plenty of time to ask questions about the engineering profession and were able to walk away feeling informed about their future career options.
Students commented that they learned....
- "[about] the problem solving aspect and working with others. ...this program has really opened my eyes..."
- "[about] career options in the field and how to get there."
- "[engineering] involves a lot of physics and computer work."
Students agreeed that participating in the event had increased their interest in a career in the Engineering profession.
