Victorian College of the Arts hosts LEAP Drawing Workshop - April 2015

In the first week of the Term 1 school holidays, 21 Y10-12 students from around the State enjoyed this special LEAP into...Design experience, when the Victorian College of the Arts again generously hosted LEAP's Interdisciplinary Drawing Workshop. Students had a chance to immerse themselves in this higher education environment while learning about studying at uni for a career in art or design.

Students were guided through the studio facilities in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking and Photography by current VCA students who spoke about their own work and folios as well as their experiences of their entry interview. Lisa Radford (sessional lecturer in the painting department), gave valuable insights into the student selection criteria.

The second half of the day was held at The Australian Centre of Contemporary Art (ACCA). Students were shown through the current exhibition, New 15, showcasing the latest developments in contemporary art practice from Australasia. Facilitated by Helen Berkemeier, a workshop based on the work of exhibiting artist Kate Newby followed. Students got their hands dirty in a plaster casting and mark making workshop.

The students experienced art school as a warm friendly space for new ideas - an invaluable day for those seriously contemplating studying art in the future. On reflection of the learning they gained from the experience, students comments included: "I learnt that you need to love what you do and have ideas about your work. Have passio." and "The application of skills and how art itself is incorporated into design".

A great day for students to see behind the scenes of an iconic Australian institution at the forefront of art education.
