Separating science from pseudoscience at KIOSC, Wantirna
On 17 March, around 90 students from Yarra Hills SC and Lilydale HS enjoyed exploring Science and Well-being at KIOSC, Wantirna.
Groups rotated through lab activities that helped them learn how science can improve and maintain people's health and well-being. They investigated ways in which an industrial chemist would use science in the formulation of protective sunscreens and worked out the concentration of an active drug in pharmacology.
Students also learnt about effective science communication by using their skills to decipher catchy headlines, identify pseudoscience and record a sound bite for radio.
Comments from teachers after the event indicated they would link the activity back to students' career action plans and link concepts to their classroom activities.
'I intend to link the practical component to the concepts in chemistry being discussed' (Teacher)
