Mystery Challenge: Wonthaggi students tackle natural disaster scenario
On 10 March at Wonthaggi SC, Y10 design students were given a box of mystery contents to be opened, along with a design challenge and set time constraints.
Challenged to respond to this scenario, the brief asked students to take on the role of designer and design a shelter that could protect people from danger and the elements in emergency situations. They also needed to create a space where people would feel secure and comfortable, which is fundamental to their well-being and their recovery processes after the event.
Working in teams, the students produced architectural sketch models and in some cases added internal structure, with excellent results. After shared presentations by the teams of their design solutions, the activity concluded with additional information about university, design careers and the diversity of roles within the design profession.
To integrate the students' learning from the event into their career action plans, their classroom teacher indicated he would "reinforce their options, provide choice (and) guide portfolio generation"
Student feedback after the event, indicated they learned "there are many broad areas in the design profession" and "there are many pathways".
