Students get behind-the-scenes at Barwon Health
Students from the Geelong Region gained an insight into being a health professional during this unique 'Hospital Experience Workshop' on 1 August.
Over fifty students from Colac SC, Geelong HS, Geelong Lutheran College, Lara SC, Newcomb SC, Northern Bay P-12 College and Western Heights SC experienced a day in a working hospital seeing health professionals in action and talking to current university students studying in the field.
Students and professionals talked with students about their journey towards and throughout their careers.
Highlights included hands-on activities such as the process of resuscitation with CPR and application of neck braces and a look a the challenges of occupational therapy patients such as how to get dress when you are missing the use of a limb. Students also experienced a behind-the-scenes tour showing what goes on when different patients come to the hospital.
90.8 per cent of students who participated said that the experience increased their knowledge of different jobs in the health professional, with one student commenting that the most important thing they learned was that "the health profession isn't just about doctors and nurses". 74 per cent said of students also said that their interest in a career in the health profession had increased.
94.3 per cent of students maintained or increased their interest in going to university. One student said they learned that "you will discover more pathways and options when you get to uni and you don't have to know exactly what you want to do".
