KIOSC and LEAP collaborate to unleash students' "inner scientist"
Around 115 Y8 students from Yarra Hills SC Mooroolbark and Mt Evelyn campuses immersed themselves in the varied science roles and activities offered at this event, hosted by KIOSC, Wantirna on 11 May 2016.
While some students learned the finer art of being a 'science communicator', others donned lab coats for one of two different lab activities: the 'food technologist' groups tested yoghurt products against food safety standards, while the 'agronomist' groups analysed the sugar content of various foods.
Students gained real insights into some of the many science careers and options for science-related studies, learned about the diversity of roles scientists work at, within the sciences professions, and got a first-hand taste of university life and the great facilities available to university students.
Teacher feedback indicated the workshop experiences were "very well run", provided "...insight into real science professions, careers, vocation" and would be used to initiate a students' "feedback and discussion session in their 'world of work' class."
Students commented: "that there are a lot more science professions than I thought", and "I learned about all the pathways and options."
