Student Spotlight: Catherine

Catherine (Y12, CRC Melton) was one of many students to attend the LSAP workshop earlier this year.

The workshop was designed to help students in years 10, 11 and 12 realise their passion for law and politics, and develop the skills to succeed in their future study and career.

“The LEAP workshop really helped me solidify my career path. It was a wonderful experience meeting other students from all over Victoria who are as passionate about Law and Politics as I am”, Catherine told us.

“I plan to study a Double Bachelor of Law and Arts with a Major in Political Science and a Minor in Literature. My ideal job initially after university would be a Judge's Associate which I give thanks to the LEAP Workshop for showing me what an interesting and incredible profession it is.”

Catherine’s role as a Social Justice Captain at school involves campaigning, fundraising and raising awareness for a range of human rights and social justice issues. These include topics such as domestic violence, human trafficking and even environmental issues like the importance of fair trade and palm oil free produce.

After hearing about Victoria University’s Young Women in Leadership event with former Governor-General the Honourable Quentin Bryce, Catherine was quick to apply for a place at the event. To register, students were asked to identify the issues they would advocate if they were Governor-General for a week, as well as questions they would ask Ms Bryce at the event. Catherine was one of the few students selected to ask Ms Bryce her question in person.

“The Young Women in Leadership event was absolutely incredible”, Catherine told us. “It was the most nerve racking experience of my life (asking Ms Bryce a question on Domestic Violence) as I knew it’s an issue she holds close.”

“Hearing Mrs Bryce talk about so many issues that are so important to myself and obviously others was an incredible experience and she was so empowering - she undoubtedly motivated me to persevere through adversity and criticism and to never give up on what I want especially just because I'm a female.”
